Finding Inner Peace

Inner peace is a state of mind. Lack of inner peace causes an array of difficulties in life. When we don’t acknowledge and work through our emotions, or we allow outside circumstances to influence how we react and behave, then this lack of inner balance wreaks havoc, causing us to experience fluctuating emotions, which can lead to wasted time, restlessness, and indecisiveness because we don’t feel capable of handling anything.

Our attitude has a significant role in how we feel, which in turn will affect how our life plays out. If we choose to be overwhelmed by feelings of anger, impatience, and irritability, and take them out on those around us, we will only end up making things even worse, which will result in feelings of regret and a loss of inner peace.

We can choose our thoughts. It’s just as easy to choose a positive thought as it is a negative one, but because most people make a habit of focusing on the negative, those seem to be more prevalent. It’s important to find a balance of dealing with the stresses of daily life and allowing ourselves to detach from a pre-set negative outlook.

For example, imagine that as soon as you wake up you groan as you start to think about all the tasks that you have to take care of, and immediately start worrying about what is going to go wrong first, or where you will find the time to get everything done. Feels kind of bleak, doesn’t it? Now, instead of focusing on all that could go wrong, imagine that you begin the day with a smile and tell yourself what a fabulous day you are going to have and focus on all the good things you are going to do or experience. That feels much better! It’s not about being fake or ambivalent about anything; rather, it’s about making the best of your day.

By taking control of our thoughts and exercising (un)common sense and not allowing the events in our lives to distract us from focusing on what is important, then we will find inner balance and restore inner peace.

If we could learn how to balance rest against effort, calmness against strain, quiet against turmoil, we would assure ourselves of joy in living and psychological health for life.
