There is no one else on this earth who is exactly like you. That’s impressive when you think about it.
Yet, we often compare ourselves to others and undermine our own value, our own worth. We lament how different we are, and we want to be like (insert name here), but it’s because we are different that makes us special.
“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”
Marilyn Monroe
It’s important to focus on our own progress and growth rather than comparing it to someone else’s. It can be detrimental to our well-being and personal growth to compare ourselves to others. We come from diverse backgrounds and have our own distinctive path in life. Comparing ourselves to others overlooks our individual circumstances and experiences, as well as our strengths and challenges.
“A star does not compete with other stars around it; it just shines.”
Matshona Dhliwayo
If we’re constantly comparing ourselves to others, it will negatively affect our self-esteem and confidence, and lead to unfair judgments and unrealistic expectations. In addition, it will make us feel inadequate or like we’re not measuring up. If we’re too focused on what other people are doing, we may end up losing sight of our own goals and aspirations. Instead, we should focus on our own strengths and accomplishments, work toward our own dreams, and stay true to ourselves in order to build a strong sense of self-worth.
“I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.”
Anne Freud
While we all have talents and aptitudes, we don’t all have the same ones or the same blend of them. But that’s a good thing! We each can add our own special touch to create something truly remarkable. And we can learn new skills to add to our repertoire so we can grow to our full potential.
“We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and our adventure to discover our own special light.”
Mary Dunbar
