Paddling Upstream vs. Going with the Flow

Sometimes we are so sure that what we want and wish for is just what we need, and that it must come to us in whatever way we have determined that it should. We can get so stubbornly set on the ‘one and only way’ and put so much energy into resisting anything other than what we specifically have in mind, that we effectively prevent all other potentially desirable outcomes from coming into fruition. We end up losing sight of the bigger picture, and as a result, we feel more and more frustrated, discouraged, and defeated.

“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.”

Napoleon Hill

When we release our insistence on specific details of how our dream will come true, and simply allow ourselves to be open to something even better, we will often be pleasantly surprised by what happens. As we stop resisting and trying to force a certain outcome in a certain way, and instead focus our energy only on the end result – the feeling that we are aiming for by achieving a goal – we become more open to unexpected blessings.

But this is easier said than done, especially when we want something so badly. Letting go of how it is ‘supposed’ to happen feels like we’re just giving up on our dream, like if we don’t have it all worked out, then it won’t manifest for us. Interestingly, that is not how it works.

“Begin with the end in mind.”

Stephen Covey

As we become caught up in the drama, basically paddling upstream fighting the current of our flow, we deny ourselves the very thing we want! When we relax, let go of the ’how’ and just allow ourselves to be carried forward toward our ultimate end result, our flow will guide us right to it.

Our feelings are feedback, and as we practice becoming aware of how we’re feeling, acknowledging when we’re resisting the flow (which is feedback in the form of frustration, etc.) we can then adjust our thinking and get back on track. Our energy levels will increase since we’re allowing our flow to move us in the right direction.

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

Jimmy Dean

It takes a certain amount of courage to surrender the how, but we must remember that the how is not really what we’re after; it is only a means to the end, only one of the routes by which we could achieve our goal. By going with the flow all the other routes that were previously blocked are now open and our flow will choose the best one to get us to where we ultimately want to go.

“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Paulo Coelho
