When we think of love, we usually think of loving others; however, love has many forms and one of those is self-love. Now, one might think that it is selfish or narcissistic to love oneself, but the truth is, we must love and respect ourselves first before we can truly share that love with others.
“If you have the ability to love, love yourself first.”
Charles Bukowski
We must have the courage to acknowledge that we are complete and whole, just as we are, and that we alone are responsible for how we feel about ourselves. We must reclaim our power instead of letting others decide how we should feel and just go along with it. When we talk to ourselves, that internal chatter that is always running in the background, we should do so mindfully, gently, and treat ourselves with respect.
“Accepting yourself only as long as you look a certain way isn’t self love, it’s self destruction.”
Laci Green
The fact that you we alive, that we have this incredible body (and it does not matter the size or shape or color of our body – it houses our true self) as well as a creative mind, and limitless potential, is wonderful. We show appreciation for this amazing gift just by allowing ourselves to be who we are, to embrace who we are in this moment; therefore, to approve of and care for ourselves is essential.
“You alone are enough, you have nothing to prove to anybody.”
Maya Angelou
