Each day presents us with opportunities to make an impression, whether good or bad, on those around us. Often, just going about our day and without intending to, we end up making an impression on someone.
“We have the wrong impression of life. We think the very big incidents of our lives are consequences of huge dilemmas or major decisions. If we paid attention, we’d realize that the determining incidents in our lives are ordinary things.”
Asghar Farhadi
People notice and tend to respond more favorably to us when they sense we have a genuine caring attitude. Although we may not realize it at the time, when we do something kind for someone, offer help or guidance, or smile and ask, “How are you?”, and actually wait for their response and interact with them, then we usually leave a good impression on them.
On the other hand, when we are impatient, speak harshly, or react angrily, then people notice that as well, and will likely mirror that back to us, and they will have a negative impression.
While no one is perfect, and there will be times when we speak or behave rashly or thoughtlessly, it’s important to keep in mind that our words and actions matter, and we should strive to always do the best we can to act with integrity.
“Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent.”
Dalai Lama
