Focused Awareness

Whether you realize it or not, you always have an opportunity to bring focused awareness into your life. You can transform regular, everyday experiences into opportunities to focus your attention on what is happening, right here and now, in the present moment.

Most of us do not often fully experience being in the present moment during everyday life. Our minds tend to leave the current moment and get caught up in time traveling to thought worlds, focusing on either the past or future more so than on the life that is actually happening right now; that is, our thoughts jump from one thought to another – anywhere from old memories, to what happened this morning, to speculations of an imagined and yet-to-be-determined future.

We are constantly inundated with distractions. Besides being focused on your work, chores, family and friends, there are, among other things, the Internet, phone, and TV to grab your attention. Here and there, you may have a little gap when nothing much is happening, and most likely you feel like you must fill up that gap with something.

So, what might I do with that gap, you ask? No, you do not need to search for more stimulating, external activities! It is the perfect time to focus on the present, and spend a quiet moment checking in with yourself. How are you feeling emotionally or physically? Is that an amazing meal you’re getting ready to eat? Think about the textures and flavors, and whether it is visually appealing. What about that stunning sunset or sunrise? Are you stuck waiting in line or at the doctor’s office? These are all opportunities to be fully engaged with what is happening right now – observing and participating in the moment.

Of course, you will get caught up again in your personal story of “me and my life” but try to take a few moments every day to notice what is going on in your head. Bring your attention to what is happening right now, either in your body or mind, or something that is occurring around you. Just spend a moment observing, without speculating or judging.

Life is simple, but we tend to make things complicated. What you pay attention to contributes to the quality of your life experience, so focus on something important. Find something amazing every day!

Mindfulness is the awareness that arises when we pay attention on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.

  4. I’ve been surfing online more than 2 hours today, yet I never
found any interesting article like yours.
It is pretty worth enough for me. In my view,
if all site owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the net will
be much more useful than ever before.
